Suboxone is a treatment for dependence on opiod drugs. Morphine and codeine are derived from opium. Many prescription painkillers contain opiods including methadone, oxycodone, and hydrocodone. These are sometimes called by brand names like Vicodin and Lortab.
When used or abused for an extended time opiod dependence can occur. Characteristics of dependence include withdrawal symptoms as the drug wears off, inability to quit and cravings, higher doses being needed to get the same effect (tolerance), and a variety of other undesirable effects.
When a relative was looking for help to get off codeine I suggested she try Suboxone. I looked on the internet for a list of physicians in the Houston Texas area that participate in the plan. The first few I called didn't have an immediate appointment available. Then I saw that Dr. Alan Tran participated in Suboxone treatment. I had visited Dr. Tran for another issue and called to see if he had an appointment available.
Dr. Tran wanted to talk to my relative first to get information and evaluate sincerity and motivation. Then he agreed to see her immediately and kept his office open after hours to help her. When we came in he explained the treatment plan to both of us. Then he did an exam and consultation. The patient had already started withdrawal and that is required before the treatment begins. (That is necessary to prevent an undesired side effect to the initial treatment.)
Next the doctor gave the patient a starting dose of Suboxone. It is placed under the tounge to dissolve. Then he gave some additional counceling while waiting to see if that was the ideal starting dose. The first dose was not quite enough to relieve withdrawal symptoms so a second smaller dose was given. After that the patient was feeling much better and went home with a prescription and instructions. Dr. Tran continued to stay in touch after that and adjusted the dose as needed.
The cost for the initial treatment was $250 and follow ups were $75. I thought that was very reasonable because of the amount of time that was spent. I also remember that another Doctor on the treatment list charged $350 plus $150 for follow ups and he had no appointments available for 3 weeks! The first prescription was $200 but insurance paid for that.
It has now been a few weeks and the patient is doing very well. She and I really appreciate what Dr. Tran has done to try and help. If someone has an opoid dependence issue in the Houston area they can contact Dr. Alan Tran at 832-798-6707. His office is at 13734 HWY 249, Houston Texas 77086.
